6 Subjects to Prepare Youth for Adulthood and Help Prevent Teen Pregnancy

A human brain.
Adolescent development. Adolescent development extends beyond changes to the body to encompass identity formation and cognitive, emotional, social, sexual, and spiritual growth. Mentoring and youth empowerment programming can help young people navigate these myriad changes.

Grantees of the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) don’t only teach abstinence and contraception use to prevent teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. The Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB), which administers the program, also requires them to implement activities that address three or more subject areas that prepare young people for adulthood. PREP grantees may choose from six adulthood preparation subjects in total, including healthy life skills, adolescent development, and financial literacy.

In this slideshow, we highlight all six of FYSB’s adulthood preparation subjects and share how you can incorporate them into your youth-serving program.
