Youth Bring Passion, Creativity and Hope to 2013 Mural Contest

Bridge Over Troubled Waters' winning entry is a symbolic depiction of homeless youth’s steep climb to overcome their struggles. Like the climber in the design, young people from the Boston organization move closer to success and become stronger along the way.

For the third year, runaway and homeless youth programs funded by the Family and Youth Services Bureau were invited to design a mural that could brighten their space and highlight the reality of homeless young people’s lives.

Teams of youth from 11 programs heeded the call. Their designs showcase their talents and struggles and the many ways staff members at FYSB-funded youth programs have fueled their hopes and dreams.

A panel of five FYSB staff members and six youth from grantee programs judged the entries, which consisted of a design sketch and an essay describing the youth-driven creative process. Judges looked for creativity, youth input and uniqueness.

The winner and one finalist will receive a gift card from Home Depot to help them bring their murals to life.
