Recent Research

Population Effect of Increased Access to Emergency Contraceptive Pills: A Systematic Review (January 2007)
The authors of this article, published in the Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology [Volume 109(1): 181–188], examined the effects of increased access to emergency contraceptive pills, also known as the "morning after pill," by analyzing 23 research studies in the medical literature. The authors (who are affiliated with Family Health International, Princeton University, and Johns Hopkins University) found that increased access has enhanced the use of the emergency contraception pills, but has not reduced rates of unintended pregnancy or abortion.

Environmental, Social, and Personal Correlates of Having Ever Had Sexual Intercourse Among American Indian Youths (December 2006)
In this article, published in the American Journal of Public Health [Volume 96(12):2228–2234], the authors examined risk factors associated with sexual activity among Native American youth in Minnesota. They found that the strongest correlates of becoming sexually active were the presence other high-risk behaviors such as substance use and exposure to violence.

Recent Trends in Teenage Pregnancy in the United States, 1990-2002 (December 2006)
This report from the National Center for Health Statistics presents detailed pregnancy rates for teenagers from 1999 to 2002. Among the key findings is the fact that the teen pregnancy rate has declined 10 percent since 2000 and 35 percent since the historic high in 1990. Quote for the Day

"The higher the cultural standard is set, the farther actual behavior rises to meet it. In turn, the lower the culture sets the standard, the farther below it actual behavior will sink. . . . Once the standard falls to the level of recreational sex—about where it is now—we shouldn't be surprised to find that exploitative sex has become the norm for many or that date rape has become a major problem."

(William Kilpatrick, Why Johnny Can't Tell Right from Wrong [p.75], 1992)
