Compassion Capital Fund Demonstration Program – Administration for Children and Families (Grant No. HHS-2007-ACF-OCS-EJ-0035)
Grantees will deliver capacity building services to faith-based and community organizations through the provision of training, technical assistance, and subawards. Specifically, they will build capacity in five areas: (1) leadership development; (2) organizational development; (3) program development; (4) revenue development strategies; and (5) community engagement. Eligible applicants include State, county and local governments; institutions of higher education; tribal governments; nonprofit organizations; and small businesses.

Adolescent Family Life Demonstration Projects – Office of Public Health and Science (Grant No. PA-APH-07-001)
The primary purpose of the demonstration program is to find effective means, within the context of the family, of reaching preadolescent and adolescent children before they become sexually active and encouraging them to abstain from premarital sexual activity. Programs may also reach out to adolescents who have already become sexually active, encouraging them to return to abstinence and supporting them in doing so.
Deadline for applications: June 1, 2007
The Influence of Religiosity and Spirituality on Health Risk Behaviors in Children and Adolescents – National Institutes of Health
The purpose of this program is to study the effects of spirituality and religiosity on early alcohol and drug use and sexual behavior, particularly in the area of HIV transmission.
Deadline for applications: June 5, 2007
Community Services Block Grants Training and Technical Assistance Promoting Healthy Marriages – Administration for Children and Families
The Office of Community Services will grant four to six cooperative agreements for the creation and dissemination of “best practice” technical assistance materials toward supporting healthy marriage, particularly among low-income families, racial and ethnic minorities, and adolescent parents. Eligible applicants include community- and faith-based organizations.
Deadline for applications: June 15, 2007
Recent Research
Case-Control Study of Human Papillomavirus and Oropharyngeal Cancer (May 2007)
The authors of this article, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (Volume 356:1944-1956, May 10, 2007), found that oral HPV infection is strongly associated with throat cancer. The odds of developing the cancer increased with the number of vaginal- and oral-sex partners a person had, with or without the established risk factors of tobacco and alcohol use. The authors surmise that the practice of oral sex among adolescents may be contributing to the annual increases in tonsillar and base-of-tongue cancers in the United States.
Zogby International Poll: Parental Support for Abstinence Education (May 2007)
In this 2-page document, the National Abstinence Education Association summarizes the results of a poll assessing support for abstinence education among parents. Key findings include the fact that parents prefer abstinence education over comprehensive sex education by a two to one margin, and that 80 percent of parents think it is important for their child to wait until marriage to have sex.

Quote for the Day
"It must be pretty lonely and confusing for a 13-year-old to be taught about condoms when all she really wants is to be told how to say no and that it’s OK if you are not active."
