The Trevor Project: Helping to Make Things Better for LGBTQ Youth
NCFY recently featured the Trevor Project, a nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention hotline for gay and questioning youth, in an article called, “Connectedness Is Key to Preventing Suicide Among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth.” In it, Trevor Project staff give advice for helping youth in crisis and giving them hope for a brighter future.
This fall, when the tragic suicides of several young people made national headlines, the Trevor Project entered the spotlight. Helping to promote the organization's work is a series of viral videos started in September by columnist Dan Savage and his partner, Terry. In an 8-minute YouTube video, they sent a simple message to gay and lesbian young people struggling with bullies or loneliness or depression: Even though life seems tough now, it gets better. The It Gets Better Project has grown to include thousands of videos, many of which include contact information for the Trevor Project.
